Hoezee Tackles Question: Why We Listen to Sermons?

This Spring’s annual President’s Legacy Society Luncheon featured a presentation to recognize the recent work of Calvin Seminary professor Scott Hoezee. In his recently published book “Why We Listen to Sermons” (Calvin College Press) Hoezee, who also serves as Director of the Center for Excellence in Preaching, challenges church members and congregations to more actively and purposefully listen to sermons. In an on-stage interview with John Witvliet, Director for the Calvin Institute for Christian Worship, Hoezee spoke to the role the church has in the sermon process and how this book helps congregants make sense of their role. “Preaching is the work of the whole church. The more we as church members recognize this, the better.”
