Michael Williams

Professor of Old Testament (1997)
B.A. (Columbia Bible College, 1985)
M.A.R. (Westminster Theological Seminary, 1987)
Ph.D. (University of Pennsylvania, 1999)

Michael Williams first felt the call to intense study of the Bible while he served in the United States Navy. It was during his time on a submarine that he experienced the grace of God in a deep and intense way. This produced a desire to study the Bible in great depth in order to know God better. Michael's teaching career has taken him to Westminster Theological Seminary, the University of Pennsylvania, and now Calvin Theological Seminary. He has also had the opportunity to teach at St. Julian's Center in Kenya, Donetsk Regional Theological College in Ukraine, and Warsaw Biblical Seminary in Poland. One of Michael's gifts is his capacity for languages. He is proficient in seven Ancient and Medieval Languages (Biblical Hebrew and Aramaic, Akkadian, Ugaritic, Sumerian, Arabic and Greek), and reads French, German and Modern Hebrew.

Michael teaches classes in Hebrew and Old Testament, including a new online Hebrew course.

"My primary goal at Calvin Theological Seminary is to equip students with knowledge of the Old Testament languages so that they may grow in their comprehension and appreciation of redemptive history and be adequately prepared to promote and defend the Reformed faith through word and action as they serve their neighbors in thankfulness to God."

Michael is married and enjoys reading, drawing and hiking.

He is the author of Deception in Genesis: A Comprehensive Analysis of a Unique Biblical Phenomenon, The Prophet and His Message: Reading Old Testament Prophecy Today, and numerous articles on Old Testament topics in various reference works and academic journals.
