Remembering Howie Vanderwell (1937-2018)

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Reverend Howard D. Vanderwell.  He passed from this world into glory on March 23, 2018.  Having received a Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees from Calvin Seminary (as well as a Doctorate of Ministry from Westminster Theological Seminary – California), Howie served a number of congregations in the Christian Reformed Church (CRC) during his over forty years of ministry.  In addition to his pastoral roles,he also served in larger denominational positions, serving as president of the CRC Synod on three occasions.

After his retirement from pastoral ministry, Howie began work as a Pastoral Resource Specialist at the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, a shared resource between Calvin College and Seminary.  In his role, he also served as an adjunct professor of worship, a position he held until his passing.  In remembrance and celebration of all the work God called him to, Howie was awarded a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2017.

At Calvin Seminary his pastoral and mentoring presence will be greatly missed.  His kindness and warmth cannot be duplicated.

Reverend Vanderwell was active in the Calvin Seminary, even until his last few months.  Below is Howie’s last chapel, from November 3, 2017.
